This is the time of year when it’s good to check on something that many anglers don’t think about checking on. That would be your boat trailer. So many of us just hook the trailer up and head for the lake, and much of the time that works out fine. But if you experience just one trailer problem that could have been averted, it’s worth the time to do so. Here are some things you should check before your next fishing trip.

Check the air in the tires. A properly inflated tire will be safer and add to the life of the tire. A properly inflated tire will also provide better gas mileage, and we need to do all we can to save gas. It helps our pocketbook, but it also helps us to be more energy-independent if we can conserve fuel whenever possible. Properly inflated tires saves gas.

Next, check the lights on the trailer. When you hit the brakes, the brake lights should go on. Same is true for the left and right turn signals, traveling lights, you get the idea. This simple check can save lots of headaches.

Make sure the grease levels are where they should be on the wheel bearings, and give the lug-nuts a quick tightening. These are simple things to do and don’t take much time, but they can really make your boating and fishing much more enjoyable.
