Trailering Ideas

By Bob Jensen - October 1, 2007
This is the time of year when it’s good to check on something that many anglers don’t think about checking on. That would be your boat trailer. So many of us just hook the trailer up and head for the lake, and much of the time that works out fine. But if you experience just one trailer problem that could have been averted, it’s worth the time to do so. Here are some things you should check before your next fishing trip.

Check the air in the tires. A properly inflated tire will be safer and add to the life of the tire. A properly inflated tire will also provide better gas mileage, and we need to do all we can to save gas. It helps our pocketbook, but it also helps us to be more energy-independent if we can conserve fuel whenever possible. Properly inflated tires saves gas.

Next, check the lights on the trailer. When you hit the brakes, the brake lights should go on. Same is true for the left and right turn signals, traveling lights, you get the idea. This simple check can save lots of headaches.

Make sure the grease levels are where they should be on the wheel bearings, and give the lug-nuts a quick tightening. These are simple things to do and don’t take much time, but they can really make your boating and fishing much more enjoyable.

Modern-day trailers have made life so much easier for those of us who pull boats. I trailer tens of thousands of miles a year on ShoreLand’r trailers. These trailers load and unload so quickly and easily at the ramp, and they’ve provided me with trouble-free trailering. My mechanical skills are almost zero, so I really appreciate a trailer that can provide a safe fishing trip.

Another thing that anglers should be thinking about this time of year is the line on their reels. If you’re like many anglers, you probably should look at adding some new line to your reels. It doesn’t take too many snags and cut and re-ties to get the line down on the reel. A reel that is filled to the proper level performs much better, and will also be welcomed when that big one takes your bait. Your line is the only thing between you and the fish. It’s an inexpensive insurance policy that will increase your odds of catching bigger fish. If you’re a superline fan, the new FireLine Crystal has been a winner. If you like monofilament, you won’t go wrong with one of the Trilene selections. Trilene Maxx is tough stuff that is very manageable; Trilene Sensation is sensitive and has outstanding knot strength. Choose what’s best for your style of fishing.

Much of the time a successful fishing trip is created through planning and preparation. Trailers and line are a big part of those preparations. Make sure yours are in tip-top shape and your fishing trips will be much more productive.
