Canadian Border Updates
Peanut,
All I am aware of is starting in March they will now also accept a rapid antigen test as proof of negative test. The catch is it still must be done by a clinic or pharmacy and it must be done within 24hrs of entering. The PCR and NAT tests are still accepted and the same 72hrs as it was previous is still allowed. So basically all they have done is given you a second option on the negative covid screening, that's it for now. As of today ArriveCan, proof of vaccination, and negative covid screening are still required to enter. So no real changes yet.
Gobbler, we were able to get PCR & or NAT tests both as scheduled from our local Mayo clinic, CVS, and Walgreens pharmacies. The problem you can run into is turn around time on the pharmacy tests, and Pharmacies running out of tests at the last minute. For the Mayo test they were kind enough to stamp mine as for travel. Whether that expedited it or not I don't know, but I had mine on time.
As far as ArriveCan, you will have shot history already loaded. Each of us on our trips had hard copy print outs of our shot record and our PCR or NAT test. At no time were we asked to see our individual phones, or a hard copy of our shot record. They did ask to see the hard copy of each of our negative covid tests.
Have a plan how you will handle a random test if needed, you need solid signal to get in the queue and on video with the switch health nurse. (lets hope this silly requirement goes away as it provides no value to the traveler or the people of Canada)
As long as you have a hard copy of all the items ie shots, and correct type negative test I would not expect an issue.
Your ArriveCan can not be submitted until 72 hrs prior to entry into Canada, and asking the customs officials he said they prefer the entry time you enter to be within 15 mins of the actual time...well I can't imagine that is frequently hit so take it with a grain of salt.
The custom officials at the border were friendly professional. Besides the Covid protocols we were asked all the same questions as usual. Particularly quizzed to make sure we had no live bait, as crawlers, and salted minnows are no longer allowed. So zero dead, salted, crawlers nothing.
Three guys in the truck our total time at the border was less than 7 mins. That included 3 mins waiting in line. So if you meet all the hoops, and have a decent agent, you answer the questions correctly easy. Oh course you have to bring it all together to do it.
My suggestion is if you have a group of adults someone confirms they all took the correct test. We had one guy take an antigen test which we caught when we all got on a phone conference 2 nights before going through everything. Lucky we got him straight. They were seriously looking at the type of tests. If you don't do that have a plan what you will do if someone from your group gets culled from the herd...
Like I said if you want to go. It can easily be done. Some may just not want to jump through all the hoops to do so. Maybe they will start to relax some of the requirements based on what has been learned to date.
good luck.
Our group of 2 crossed last year the first weekend the border opened. The testing and arrivcan wasn't bad at all. I'm glad you don't have to show anything on your phone, because there is no service at the pigeon river crossing. We have 3 going this year and possibly 2 more. I hope the 72 hr test prior gets dropped. We are all vaxxed and ready to fish canada in 2022. Good luck to all.
