Gearing Up For A Successful Season
By Jackie Vogen - January 1, 2008While fishing in my boat last year, I surveyed my deck space and came up with some ideas on how to better utilize my space. Instead of having rods lying around, I purchased some additional rod holders. Then I wanted to
Now is a good time to add equipment or consider upgrades to your existing equipment. Analyze what you have and then consider your alternatives. For instance, what about upgrades to your trolling motor? Have you given any thought of adding an AutoPilot or CoPilot? And, talking about motors, I've removed the blades on my trolling motor and engine and inspected them for line. Also, I've purchased extra props to carry on the boat; it's always best to be prepared in case you need to change them. If you talk to your boat dealer, they can suggest and recommend ways to make modifications to your existing equipment.
The beginning of the New Year is the perfect time to plan your fishing getaways for the upcoming fishing season. By doing your home work early in the year, you'll have plenty of time to research and check out lakes and lodges. By making your reservations early, you'll have greater flexibility with dates and choice of lodging. Successful fishing requires various types of tackle that's relative to the area and the type of species that you want to encounter. While making your reservation, ask when the best time of the season is for fishing various species. Pre-trip planning allows you the advantage of ordering your hot spot maps in a timely fashion. Not being hurried or rushed offers you the advantage of planning in an organized fashion.
When January rolls around, I start thinking about the upcoming Outdoor Shows that I'll be attending. Once I decide on what speakers and seminars that I'd like to see, then I can schedule my dates. I always enjoy attending Babe Winkelman's seminars and it's always nice to drop in at the Lake Link booth and say hello to Darin, Steve and Don. Also, don't forget to call your friends - it's always fun to attend the shows with a friend. And, one nice thing that you can always count on is that your friends will help you spend your money. The Outdoor Shows are a great time to explore new products on the market and pick up the latest tackle and equipment. Also, now is a good time to check out that boat you've been thinking about buying. Boat dealers need to clean out their previous years' inventory in order to make room for their new boats, so they're willing to compete for your business. One of my highlights of attending the Outdoor Shows is the camaraderie, and I always enjoy keeping in touch with my angling friends in the Industry.
The beginning of the New Year is a prime opportunity for anglers to plan, organize, and research. By taking advantage of this opportunity, you're pretty much guaranteed a successful fishing year.
